Story of Safiya Tehreem

Patient Background

Safiya Tehreem is a 4-year-old girl from Hosakote, Bangalore. She comes from a financially vulnerable family where her father is the sole earning member. Safiya has two siblings, and the family depends entirely on her father’s income to meet their daily living expenses.

Initial Symptoms and Medical History

Safiya initially developed persistent fever and cough, which continued for more than a week. Concerned about her health, her family approached local doctors, and several preliminary investigations were carried out. The initial reports revealed abnormal findings, indicating that further specialized evaluation was required.

Referral to SSCHRC, Bangalore

With the support and guidance of one of their relatives, Safiya’s family brought her to SSCHRC, Bangalore. Upon arrival, the SSCF team immediately took responsibility for her care and conducted detailed clinical evaluations and diagnostic investigations.

Diagnosis

The investigation reports confirmed that Safiya was suffering from Precursor B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. The diagnosis came as a devastating shock to the family. They were emotionally distressed and extremely worried about Safiya’s future, especially after learning about the prolonged and expensive nature of the treatment.

Financial Constraints and Family Concerns

Safiya’s parents expressed their inability to afford the cost of treatment due to their limited financial resources. As the father was the only earning member of the family, managing the expenses of leukemia treatment was beyond their means.
